Business Intelligence Case: Toyota Motor Sales USA

Want another one of Business Intelligence?

The year is 2021 and you still don't use technology tools to manage your work? Or if not, do you still see no purpose in using them? Ok, ok, be open to a new perspective and later on we will see if your initial convictions remain.

Let's take a look at our 3rd example of a success story. Once again, the implementation of a Business Intelligence system has improved decision processes and, consequently, boosted results. In today's article, we report on how this happened at a distributor of an important multinational: Toyota.

Beforehand, it is worth mentioning that this episode occurred in the 90s, a fact that illustrates that the search for and implementation of these tools has been going on for over 30 years and has already had considerable time to mature and solidify in the market.
At the time, it was found that, internally, the management of data at Toyota's North American headquarters was in chaos. The information analysis system adopted until then was counterproductive, since it created endless reports without any direction.

As a result of the diagnosis, the company decided to hire a new CIO (Chief Information Officer). The new hire, Barbara Cooper, was responsible for changing the strategic direction of the company.

With this, she was able to gain a deeper understanding of the company's needs and pains, which "boiled down to" the lack of accuracy of the data provided and, consequently, inconsistent reporting and the generation of "irrelevant" indicators. Barbara, along with her team, opted to adopt an IB tool in addition to other technologies in order to improve the processes in their entirety.

Once implemented, according to company reports, within a matter of days some improvements were already perceptible, such as the verification of a duplicate collection in the amount of US $800,000.00.
Still, it was observed in the years that followed an increase of 40% in the number of cars traded by the company and a reduction in transportation time (logistics) of 5%, advances that allowed Toyota to reach the highest profit margins in the market as of the year 2000.

According to analyses carried out in 2011 by IDC Inc., it was found that the company had already had a return of at least 506% on the investment made in BI.

Therefore, it becomes clear the need for an efficient organizational structure of information, besides the establishment of a logic for the "crossing" of data, aiming at the production of useful indicators for the decision-making processes
