IB case: COPA 2014 - Germany 7 x 1 Brazil

Taking advantage of the Olympic spirit that took place this month, did you know that Business Intelligence can also be used in sports? Today, we will recall an episode a little traumatic for Brazilians, but for a good cause: understanding how B.I. tools are the icing on the cake, wherever they are implemented.

The episode I am referring to is Germany's 7×1 against Brazil in the 2014 World Cup. Don't be fooled, this is not a conspiracy theory about how Germany "stole", or anything of that nature. But while the victory was legitimate, the Germans were a step ahead. In addition to all the technique and preparation, the German team on this occasion also adopted the use of a Business Intelligence tool in their training, which undoubtedly undoubtedly helped them in their decision making - any any similarity with the purpose of a BI software is not mere coincidence (don't know what I'm talking about? Run to read our article "What isa Business Intelligence Software".).

In practice, the difference between the strategy built by the Brazilian team and the German one differed in terms of data reliability, which later, in the field, influenced the decisions and tactics chosen by the players. By studying the Brazilian team using a Business Intelligence tool, the Germans had access to a series of information such as the "average number of mistakes made by player X when kicking left", "number of penalties taken to the right by player Y", etc. In other words, they had the opportunity to analyse concrete behavioural patterns, measured by the software, of their opponents and, therefore, were able to prepare for the match with distinct "precision". And it was this precision, allied to all the other technical competencies of the team, and later, to the psychological upset of the Brazilians, that made such a victory possible.

But, if it's any consolation, two years after the trauma, in the 2016 Olympic Games, the Brazilian men's football team adopted, by free spontaneous pressure, the use of an I.B. tool, and the result couldn't have been any other. Gold!

With this article, consider started the series of contents about cases of BI in different areas! And you, how have you innovated in your area of expertise? Waiting to take a "7×1" to change your modus operandi?
